What BuzzConf means to you

I loved so much of BuzzConf. It’s hard to convey how much I loved it. Thanks so much for getting this conference up and running. I had the best time.

Amazing to get great internet at a festival!

My boss is talking about sending my whole team next year. And Jack (my 7yo) is going nuts that he has to wait a whole year to be able to come. He’s put his BuzzConf sticker on his laptop already.

Rick Measham, Director of Software Development at astutepayroll.com

I thought it was an incredible experience to all. I learned from others, connected and am very much looking forward to making it an yearly event on my personal calendar.

The most interesting conference I’ve ever been to. A great mix of technology thinkers set at a relaxed environment, where everyone chills together.

Adrianna Belotti, Online Marketing & Web Dev

BuzzConf Was Awesome. As a unique blend of conference and festival, BuzzConf was good. Really good.

BuzzConf was an intentionally kids-friendly event, with lots of maker-focused activities for both kids and adults alike. It’s a big step up for inclusiveness and diversity, and all the kids I saw seemed to be having the best time ever.

So I hope you get the idea that BuzzConf was incredible.

Paul Fenwick, Benevolent Troublemaker and Freedom Loving Scientist

BuzzConf was such a blast. It was like a cross between a weekend barbeque – chilled, relaxed and friendly – and a grassroots technical conference.

As a woman, I found it a really inviting, safe and welcoming event, and it was wonderful to see a lot of diversity in the presenters and attendees.

It was great to spend time with people actively making and exploring technology, and to chat with other like-minded souls, and generally nerd out. A++ would buy again

Controlling the future – Kathy Ried

You might be old enough to remember computers that didn’t have a mouse – where you used special key combinations to send commands to the machine. Then along came the mouse, and the graphics tablet, and the graphical user interface. The advent of the iPhone in 2007 brought with it a revolution in touch interfaces, and touch screens are now common place.

Siri, Cortana and Google Now introduced ‘conversational UIs’ – or voice interfaces, where we use natural language to find answers, get directions or have our devices do our bidding.

So, what’s next? Will I be able to control something with the power of my mind? What about natural user interfaces, gesture control and so on?

This presentation will cover advances in user interface and control mechanisms, and demonstrate how you will be able to control the future.

The Future is Awesome (and what you can do about it) – Paul Fenwick

The 21st century is a time with an unprecedented expansion of ideas, culture, technology, information, and global justice. Compared to any other point in history, humans are flourishing. Yet the way in which we think about the world—and our shared future in it—has not accelerated at the same pace. Join us to find out why the future is awesome in ways you may not expect, and what you can do about it.

The BuzzConf Corner

BuzzConf is a technology festival with a difference. All participants and presenters spend the whole weekend together in a scenic campground rather than in a stuffy conference centre – playing with gadgets, enjoying live music, and learning about technology together.

Bring the family down to Nodebots Day to meet the team and get a little taste of what BuzzConf is all about. This event will include a Virtual Reality cinema, programming tools and robotics for children, and 3D-printed robot spiders!

Virtual Reality Cinema

Virtual Reality is upon us, its a new frontier, a new medium. Forcing a rethink of our approach to film, interactives and games alike. Creators are pushing these new visual boundaries and revisiting and reinventing the sphere of audio production and playback.

VR enables new experiences, ideas, new worlds and different perspectives on experiences of the current world around us. All with digital screens strapped to our heads… who would’ve imagined such a thing, sounds more like a surrealist prank. But it’s here and the world is fast embracing it. This year is the time to experiment and to push into VR.

3D Printing and Robotics

Come and meet Steve and Yoric – a pair of robot spiders created by Adam Purdie (from previous BuzzConf sessions 3D Printing with Blender and Making Sense of Molten Plastic) and decide whether you find them cute or terrifying! Either way, the engineering will inspire and open up your imagination to a world of possibilities with Making and 3D Printing.

Flobots

See Nick Moore‘s latest project up close! First showcased at BuzzConf Night session The Internet of Toys, Nick’s creations bring the joys of robotics and programming to children. The incredibly simple interface of his programming tool Flobot makes programming a breeze and debugging a thing of the past. If that wasn’t enough, you can inspect the hardware he is building and marvel at the miniature robots you can assemble and program with it.
